Administration officials confirmed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
